This piece is a part of “90 Monarchs” from my solo exhibition, “Curaga.”
I made 90 Monarch Butterflies to illustrate the fact that migratory monarch populations in North America have declined drastically— 90% since the 1990s. The security of this species in the future is not clear at this time but since they are a migratory species, there are plenty of places they can survive. The problem remains, though, that they are being driven out of their core breeding habitat, essentially by humans. The state of Wisconsin was recently awarded a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (November 2017) to help restore critical monarch habitat along the Mississippi River.
